The history of Tequesta stretches back to the early 18th century when the Tequesta Indians settled along the banks of the Loxahatchee River. These Native Americans were fishermen and farmers who lived in small tribal villages and supplemented their diets by hunting and gathering food from the surrounding wetlands. Tequesta was originally known as “Jupiter Island” when it was incorporated in 1953. However, in 1982, the name was changed to Tequesta in order to better reflect its storied past. Today, Tequesta is best known for its beautiful beaches, parks, and trails. From kayaking and paddleboarding down the Loxahatchee River to snorkeling and diving off the coast of Jupiter Island, there are numerous ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Tequesta’s surrounding area. Near Jupiter Island is the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, a national park home to marshland and woodland areas that are important habitats for many species of wildlife, birds, and fish. Visitors to the Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge can observe more than 250 species of birds, many species of butterflies, and other forms of wildlife while they take in the tranquil scenery.
